Non-uniform metamorphosis underlies different development trajectories in hatchery-reared flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus)

چکیده

The flathead grey mullet ( Mugil cephalus ) is at the focus of an intense domestication effort. However, despite significant advances, aquaculture mullets still based on capture wild fingerlings in estuaries and stocking them into ponds. Such reliance seed limits production since it highly seasonal, unpredictable, hinders genetic improvement programs may negatively affect local fisheries. As captive breeding has been optimized for species, to date, larval rearing remains main challenge hindering commercial captive-bred mullets. Here we set out characterize development under conditions identify key developmental bottlenecks. By analyzing four batches from a hatchery, defined ten distinct stages hatching end metamorphosis macroscopically observable morphological features. Using this atlas study dynamics, found that larvae exhibit biphasic growth profile with 17-fold increase rates onset metamorphosis. Moreover, within batches, size variation almost doubles metamorphosis, suggesting critical step increases by dictating different trajectories early late-metamorphosing larvae. plotting against morphometric parameters, show here age poor predictor due large variations both between batches. We begin threshold ~4.5 mm, however varies greatly even This variance further amplified aforementioned enhanced results non-uniform fry, which complicate weaning procedures. Understanding treating underlying causes delayed are therefore considered important steps full mullet.

Anisakidae nematodes isolated from the flathead grey mullet fish (Mugil cephalus) of Buenaventura, Colombia

Anisakiasis is a parasitic infection caused by larval stages of nematodes of the genus Anisakis, Pseudoterranova and Contracaecum, of the Anisakidae family. The lifecycle of these nematodes develops in aquatic organisms and their final hosts are marine mammals. However, humans can act as accidental hosts and become infected with infective stage larvae (L3) by consuming raw or undercooked fish o...

Use of flathead mullet (Mugil cephalus) in coastal biomonitor studies: review and recommendations for future studies.

There has been a widespread world-wide use of flathead mullet, Mugilcephalus, in fish biomonitor studies within the coastal zone. This review summarises this research field, focusing on heavy metals, and considers the implications of the accumulated data. Differences in sampling methodology, tissues analysed and units of reported data provide challenges in assessing and benchmarking these biomo...

Gonad Development and Hormonal Induction in Artificial Propagation of Grey Mullet, Mugil Cephalus L

Grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L. is an marine teleost suitable for culture in brackish water. To date, very few report on artificial propagation of grey mullet has ever been recorded and still seed stocking relies on wild recruitment. This paper describe the technique of controlled ovarian maturation and artificial spawning in this fish species. The brood stocks were obtained from cultured mature...
